Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey Set New Cash Game Poker Record On TV
Poker on television continues to see an increase in
popularity thanks to the huge pots generated by high-stakes
poker pros who are looking to bust their opponents on
every turn. Until recently, Tom Dwan ("durrrr")
and Barry Greenstein held the record for the largest
poker pot played out on TV, but that has changed thanks
to a recent hand from a popular Online Poker Room Million
Dollar Cash Game televised on SKYTV in Europe. The poker
hand was first reported when it took place in September
2009, but since it's been aired now on television, and
would make great for discussions and poker analysis.
During the poker hand,
Tom Dwan goes after the man behind last year's biggest
poker story, 2 World Series of Poker bracelets and
making the WSOP Main Event final table poker champion
Phil Ivey. The new record sits over $1,100,000 after
both poker players got their money in the pot while
holding straights.
The poker action seen Tom Dwan
on the button and holding 7h 6h, create a sizable
preflop pot of nearly $50,000 against Phil Ivey who
was already in the small blind holding Ac 2d. The flop
came Jc 3d 5c, giving both Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey gutshot
straight draws. Phil Ivey then led out for $35,000 with
the wheel and backdoor nut flush draw. Tom Dwan took
his time thinking over his move before making the call
with his straight draw.
This is where things it all got interesting, as the
4h fell on the turn. Phil Ivey quickly bumped the pot
by $90,000 and Tom Dwan took his time before raising
up the pot action to $232,600. Phil Ivey then moved
his chips all-in, pushing the pot well past seven digits
only to see Tom Dwan instantly call with the nut straight.
When the money went in to the pot, Phil Ivey was drawing
completely dead. The river completed the board with
the Jh, leaving Phil Ivey with nothing to do but sit
and think about the way the hand played out. Ironically,
it was fellow player Patrik Antonius who kept wincing
at the hand results, not Phil Ivey, who remained quite
calm despite losing the monster poker hand.
Considering the way these poker pros play cash games,
don't expect it to be too long before this record is
set again. To watch the poker hand action as it happened,
